Online vs Real Life: Which is better?

Love is something that all of us long for. It's part of who we are to want to be able to fall in love, meet the one, and spend the rest of our lives together.

But today, the way we date is changing. Thanks to apps such as Tinder and Hinge, more of us are meeting people online.

In this article, I want to explore the pros and cons of this change. Is it better to meet people in real life or use dating apps?

Online

Quick and easy

The first and probably the most obvious benefit of using dating apps is that they're quick and easy. Instead of having to make yourself look nice, going to a bar, spending a load of money, and then probably still getting rejected anyway, you can instead just sit on your sofa, and swipe right.

You can also use dating apps whilst doing other things, for example, whilst waiting for a bus, or whilst your popcorn is in the microwave.

Distance is not an issue

Before the invention of social media, and online dating, you could only date people who you were able to meet in real life. Most of the time, this meant dating people who lived locally to you. But let's be honest for a second, there a 7 billion people on the planet, what are the chances that the one for you just happens to live within a 30 minute drive to you?

Thanks to dating apps, you can meet people from all over the world.

There for a reason

The trouble with going to bars is that you aren't guaranteed that any of the people there are there to meet people to date.

Real you

People do just go to bars for the drinks or to spend time with their friends. But online dating on the other hand, if you sign up for an online dating site (or app) there is a 99.9% chance you're interested in dating.

The real you

The first issue with dating apps, and the one that most of the critics are eager to mention is that it's harder to really get to know someone. On most of them, you're judging them based upon their appearance, and even the ones that pretend to be about personality are actually just about ability to write a bio.

Social Skills

If you're going to be spending all of your time behind a screen, you won't learn a lot of social skills.

Social skills are similar to a lot of other skills, we need to keep on practising them, because if we don't we forget how to use them.

Of course, I'm not saying all your dates are going to be a success. But the more you try to flirt, the better you will get at flirting.

Doesn't matter if you get rejected

What happens when you get rejected on social media? Nothing much! What happens when you get rejected at a bar? You get to enjoy a few more cocktails, and have a laugh with your friends.

The great thing about meeting people in real life is that there's plenty of other things to do if you do get rejected. Chances are, you didn't even go to this bar to flirt anyway. There isn't actually a black or white answer as to whether it's better to meet people in real life or through apps.

I think both of them have their benefits and drawbacks. Which one works better for you will depend on yourself, your circumstances, and what you're after. But regardless as to which option you choose, just make sure to be safe, and have fun dating!
